Methodology for launching under £25,000

My brain was in an explosion this afternoon, whilst accompanying my family and a friend on a shopping trip to Ellesmere Port, off M56. This all started due to two conversations I had yesterday. I linked the two conversations with my experience of ebdex and edocr and devised a methodology for launching a new business for £25,000. For this to work, I need two ingredients:

  1. The domain expertise must be present in-house. Ideally, the proposed startup CEO must have this expertise and must be passionate about it.
  2. It must be easy for me to understand quickly and relate to a pain I have, so that I become the customer.

Then it is my task to quickly evaluate the possibility of its potential:

  1. It must appeal to viral marketing
  2. It must be suitable for a free and fee charging pro model
  3. It must be simple to understand, if not, then find a way to simplify it
  4. It must be suitable for web 2.0 treatment, if not, then find a way

Having done that, then quickly sketch out the proposition - real fag packet stuff, complete contradiction to MBA strategising. The next stage is to work out whether it will meet the following criteria:

  1. Can the alpha product be developed for under £10,000? Alpha would be the product that will be offered free forever.
  2. Can the beta product be developed for under £10,000? Beta would be the pro version offered at a no-brainer fee, allowing revenue generation.

Allocate further £5,000 for evangelising and administration. The £20,000 development budget does not allow all bells and whistles product, but a product that works and able to attract revenues. The bells and whistles can come second after concept is proven with Alpha and Beta. So the total cost to launch is £25,000.

As a new entity the business will have zero value, but taking future growth potentials into consideration, it is not unfair to assume a valuation of £100,000. This gives the investor a 25% stake of the business and possible role of Non Executive Director or Non Executive Chairman. The business must be able to generate significant value within 2 years to provide an exit for investor. What return the investor would get is anybody’s guess, but expects to be far higher than an average investment. Of course the whole thing could go flop which applies to any investment whether you invest into a startup of a FTSE100 company.

In this scenario, I see my role as Doer and never as the CEO. As the Doer, the role of COO is more appropriate with 9 to 12 months part-time role. I would also develop the product through my new company evigon, which in turn will manage resources from my ever growing Northern StartUp 2.0 community. Or yes, for this service, I would also demand 25% of the company. The CEO would be given 50% of the company, perhaps mixture of options and equity.

What is the downside to all this? Yes, the investor could loose £25,000. I will not be able to recover my investment (time and energy) through sale of 25% equity. The same could apply to the CEO.

Above is given for guidance only, as no two circumstances are the same. Could above be applied to e-invoicing/EIPP? Yeap! Don’t be silly, when OB10 spent $30 million, how could you launch for £25,000? Yes, it is possible. Of course, you should not compare like for like, but this can be done. If you are a developer, you can in fact do this with zero cost as you would be developing it. But what I stated here include paying for development time.

Anyone out there got multiple of £25,000 to test the model? Here is a real test for you - the cost of development and running of edocr to date, excluding time costs is less than £1000. This was achieved mainly due to in-house development capability. If the model described here was applied, it would certainly come within the £25,000.

In case you are wondering, there are others out there thinking the same. And all this work could be done in the UK without having to outsource to India, Russia or anywhere else.

OpenCoffee Manchester is no more!

I am proud to have brought OpenCoffee to the North. First Manchester and then requesting Dean Sadler and Phil Blything to run Sheffield and Liverpool respectively. At the time, Imran Ali was thinking about running the same in Leeds. I convinced him to set the schedule for 1st Tuesday of the month. Manchester OpenCoffee never took off as intended. One reason perhaps was that I never gave 100% of making it a success as I was more serious about making Northern StartUp 2.0 a commercial success (at the time it was called NW StartUp 2.0 and it was free to attend).  We always struggled to have a decent number of people attending Manchester events where as more success was achieved by Leeds and Liverpool. I am not sure how successfull Sheffield has been!

At the back-end of last year, I handed over Manchester to Paul Robinson. Paul turned the event to combine with co-working which he passionately believes in. Last week Paul announced the death of OpenCoffee Manchester. Personally, I would like to see OpenCoffee Manchester continuing but without anyone else stepping into succeed Paul, I do not see any future for it’s continuation. Paul has given a number of reasons why OpenCoffee does not work in Manchester. I do not agree with all of them, but generally accepts that:

  • GeekUp - provides an environment for deep technical discussion, attended mainly by developers
  • Northern Startup 2.0 - provides an environment for entrepreneurs, investors, deal makers and service providers
  • Barcamp - Paul Robinson is attempting to make this a regular fixture in Manchester - this brings both communities together.

Paul also mentioned event fatigue in an e-mail to me, which is exactly what I have been thinking with respect to forthcoming Chinwag events in Manchester. Initially, I was interested to seek a partnership with Sam Michel, but decided against the idea as this will dilute the impact Northern StartUp 2.0 has.

Manchester certainly isn’t London. But has the potential to host successful regular events. I still believe we are only reaching out to a small number of individuals at present - so much more work is required to make all of these events even more successful.

Personally, I would like to see BarcampManchester happening not more than twice a year, but believe Paul is thinking of more regular events. Barcamps are much more demanding to attend than Geekup or Northern StartUp 2.0 events, and more regular events will ultimately results in these becoming “another event” as the excitement wears off. I hope Paul will take this concern into consideration when planning future Barcamps.

Birth of eveo Ltd

As you very well know, I have been running events for the Digital StartUp Community in the North of England for over 15 months. Whilst these events hardly make any commercial sense, I am convinced that they can grow to become a worth while business over time. In order to achieve this, the business of running events need to be released from the current chaotic environment. With this in mind, some of my network buddies and I have come together to create a new venture, eveo Ltd. I will write more about this later on.

edocr at StartUp Camp 2008

sunmicrologo.jpgmysqllogo90px.gif

edocr plans to attend the StartUp Camp on 7th and 8th March sponsored by Sun Microsystems, and co-hosted by: salesforcelogo.gifnavisitelogo90px.gifgooglelogo80px.gif

This is our first time at a StartUp Camp. According to event organisers:

“Startup Camp is an unconference which means you get to decide what the session content is. If you’re thinking of coming to Startup Camp London and want to suggest some discussion topics, you’re welcome to list them on a special page that we’ve set aside on the wiki for such discussion proposals”

So far, over 130 individuals have registered for the event. Some of these include Northerners:

Having spend over 3 yrs in the digital startup segment, I am hoping that I would get a time slot to share my experience and learn from others. I expect to cover the following areas:

  • Soft launching a digital startup under £1000 cash investment
  • Document interactivity portal – 3 applications from Knowledge Exchange, Marketing Communications Channel for Lead Generation, Event Collaboration
  • Learning from catastrophic stupidity
  • Not putting all eggs in the same basket
  • Is success guaranteed this time? Hell, yes!

As a media partner, edocr has also provided a special interest group (SIG) to capture the conversation through documents (slide packs, press releases, product info, white papers, case studies, etc) and forum. This is a pilot we are running with Sun Microsystems to demonstrate the benefit edocr could bring to event organisers.

If you are an event organiser, why not get in touch to explore how you could add value to your event and differentiate from the crowd?

Northern StartUp Mobile 2.0 - Join the North’s premier telecommunications community on 21st Feb 08

The next Northern StartUp 2.0 event is almost upon us. This time bringing the North’s premier telecommunications community together for one evening. Held one week after 3GSM Barcelona, the event aims to update the progress made within the last year and debate on the forthcoming technologies. Without further ado, here is the introduction from Imran Ali, ex-Deputy to Strategy Director of Orange:

Introduction

The umbrella term Web 2.0 provided a helpful framework for understanding various intersecting and overlapping trends, business models and design patterns across the internet industry. Despite the exponential growth of mobile communication and computing, Mobile 2.0 doesn’t describe an similarly epochal shift in mobility. The mobile industry remains mired in structural issues ranging from 3G debt to closed business and technology models…and yet carries a promise of reshaping culture, technology and business much more so than the web alone.

Openmoko, Google’s Android, Apple’s iPhone, Nokia’s Trolltech acquisition, new ethnographic research and ‘the next billion’ customers in emerging markets all point to a increasing entanglement of the Web and mobility.

  • Are mobiles simply windows into Kevin Kelly’s One Machine and the wider web?
  • Should we consider the web and mobile web as distinct?
  • Do we design for mobiles or mobility?
  • What do people really desire from mobile technology and services?
  • Are mobiles really what computers have become?

Understanding the future of mobility is about asking the right questions, postulating scenarios and deeply understanding the motivations of users - something the industry has singularly failed to do.

Mobile 2.0 seeks to explore these scenarios and questions with a range of speakers drawn from the communications industry; including thought leaders, investors and senior management. We hope you’ll join us in sharing their thoughts.

Moderator

Robert Wakeling, CEO - Robert is the founder of Wadaro Limited and has been principle in early business development, in securing support from partners & advisors and prospective investors.  Prior to Wadaro, Robert held executive management positions at Openwave Inc. Sanoodi, based in Snowdonia, North Wales is already an established Google maps mashup site that supports the recording of A to B outdoor activities such as; running, cycling, walking and mountain biking. Its growing community of over 12000 unique users have in its first year created 50,000 routes on six continents, routes that already cover over a million miles! Since version 1 moved from Beta in May last year, little has changed on the current site. Progress behind the scenes, however has been considerable. The Summer of 2007 has seen an entirely new application being developed in Bangor in consultation with a number of global players in the Mobile Internet and GIS sectors. The new site, API and mobile device applications (SMDA) are currently in private beta testing and will be made available as a public beta in March. The strategic aims of Sanoodi have remained consistent throughout this phase of its development: “Build the community, don’t clutter the site with ads, and be operationally efficient.” We will briefly describe how this strategy is being delivered and developed across convergent technologies whilst ensuring that Sanoodi has the ability a to sustain a growing, easily manageable revenue stream.
by focusing specifically the following aspects: The evolution of the Sanoodi community, application and web-site. Dealing effectively with the dichotomy of web 2.0 and advertising Mobile Sanoodi. Paul Sandham is the senior snood at Sanoodi

+ Tim Panton - Tim will be discussing some technological changes, which may shape the future of Mobile 2.0. These jigsaw pieces include: Web 2.0 changes in expectations, the imminent launch of the .tel Top level domain, the increasing programmability of iPhone and Android, and improvements in loudspeaker technology. Tim will try to indicate how these parts might come together and form a whole.

+ Ed French - Investor’s view point of 3GSM Barcelona - The Mobile Congress

The role played by this blog in FundTech’s acquisition of Accountis

Whilst I cannot take any credit for the deal between FundTech and Accountis, I feel exhilarated at the service this blog provided in above acquisition. Here are some clues:

I actually thought there was a blog post giving more clues, but perhaps not! I believe it all started at a pub near Manchester Airport, where I had the privilege to meet a Representative, who came to know me through this blog. We spoke about the industry, why e-invoicing has not taken off as it should, and the potential acquisition targets in the UK. From the companies we discussed, Accountis had more synergies with FundTech than any other. Some of these being:

  • Small company - eager to grow
  • Control reside with Founder - makes much easier to deal with one person than a large number including financial backers
  • Good technical capability - document exchange plus payments
  • Deep understanding of the industry
  • Key clients - DHL
  • Scalability - ability to scale up quickly with investment
  • Cash management - Good utilisation of cash reserves
  • Location - significant public sector funding in Wales than in England
  • Growth through cross selling - Ability to tap into each others customer base
  • New propositions - ability to introduce new services

Since my initial encounter, I had the privilege to extend my relationship with the Representative. I also knows Rhys Jones lot better now than 12 months ago. As I am bound by confidentiality, I have not revealed everything I know. Brace yourselves for another announcement soon from Accountis!

I would like to take this opportunity to convey my best wishes for all involved from both camps. Additionally,

Well done, Rhys! You did it for the second time! What’s next, Sanoodi? If you are interested in learning about Sanoodi, do attend Northern StartUp Mobile 2.0 event on 21st Feb in Manchester eOffice. Could Rhys repeat the same success for edocr? As a start, bit more commitment would be much appreciated by the team!

Over the coming weeks, I will blog more into “what this means for the industry” and “what this means to Accountis”.

OpenCoffee Manchester is innovating

Since handing over the organising of OpenCoffee Manchester to Paul Robinson and given the success of collaboration during the past events (e.g. founding of edocr), Paul has decided to combine OpenCoffee with Co-Working, an original initiative by Paul. The next event will take place on 22nd January 2008 at MDDA in Manchester. The details of the event can be found here. I have not finalised my plans for 22nd, but hope that I could attend at least the OpenCoffee session.

Whilst I believe this creates a new type of event, my suspicion is that this might end up becoming a development event in the medium term unless the right balance is reached between business and software development. The OpenCoffee component of the day could also be overrun by the Co-Working concept, reducing OpenCoffee to a coffee break. In my opinion, one way to avoid this happening is to preserve the original venue of OpenCoffee, so that Co-Working participants would have to physically move to another venue where businesses could easily interact.

One of the reasons I handed over OpenCoffee to Paul is that I could not unite business and developer community. Paul has vital connectivity and trusted by both communities which meant he is in a better situation to unite the two communities and increase attendance. I hope my reservations will be proven wrong with respect to OpenCoffee becoming a coffee break. I would like to see the original concept of Saul Klein preserved but at the same time more collaboration taking place with real interaction between the two communities.

I hear you say, come on Manoj, give Paul a break! The event has not even taken place. Bit too early to judge! With that thought, let’s make it a successful event overcoming any potential negativity.

NW StartUp 2.0 - StartUp Business Funding Event on 17th Jan 2008 at KPMG - Final Speaker List

This evening, I will be hosting my 8th event in Manchester. Doug Stellman of YFM Private Equity and Paul Barraclough of Tecmentor will be joined by Stuart Scott-Goldstone of Aaron & Partners, and Pam Holland of Telecity. Let me introduce the two new speakers:

Stuart Scott-Goldstone - Aaron and Partners

Stuart Scott-Goldstone is Head of the Corporate/Commercial Team at Aaron & Partners LLP, a commercial law firm with offices in Manchester and Chester. Stuart specialises in corporate finance transactions and has advised both investors and companies on a large number of early stage and start up investments in the North West, particular those involving regional venture capital funds. Stuart studied at Christ’s College, Cambridge and The College of Law, Chester before training and qualifying as a Solicitor at Laytons, Manchester. He also recently completed an MBA at Manchester Business School.

I first met Stuart whilst undertaking my Executive MBA at Manchester Business School, where he undertook an Entrepreneurship MBA. He is an exceptional individual and fully understand the startup businesses, having been involved with number of startups himself in many different roles.

Pam Holland - Telecity

Pam has a background in HR Management and Organisational Development, with her early experience gained in blue chip companies – BICC, Electrolux, Provident Financial and United Utilities. In 1999 she changed direction and joined start-up data centre & IT hosting business – TeleCity, as their HR Manager during the first Internet boom. Her challenge at TeleCity was to build a strategy to attract and retain the talent pool needed for a rapid pan-European expansion programme to take the company from 25 to 450 employees in under 2 years. Pam is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and has an Economics degree, MSc. in HR Management and an MBA from Manchester Business School.

Another product of Manchester Business School (MBS), I met Pam at one of the many networking events organised by MBS. Pam has an interesting story to tell about how Telecity ramped up its operations. I also heard today that Pam will be flying to Africa for 3 to 6 months voluntary work. Make sure you quizz her on the forthcoming journey!

Other Developments

Rebranding

The event series and the web site will be rebranded as “Northern StartUp 2.0″ for the interim period to increase the catchment area. This change came up after a long meeting with North West Development Agency and Sun Microsystems yesterday. Since then this initiative has been approved by our long term partner, KPMG. The definition of North is a blur to say the least. This could well be interpreted as the area above Watford, as one of our partners suggested. But in reality, the plan is to serve the four great cities of Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Sheffield. I am not alone in my thinking. Other similar initiatives plan for the future includes dotnorth by my friend, Imran Ali

Web Site

The new web site is not quite ready for launch. It will eventually provide almost an one-stop-shop for Digital Start Ups in the North:

  1. Events – There would be at least 12 branded events this year. Other event organisers will be invited to add their events to the site
  2. Blog – CxO and selected individuals from support organisations will be able to blog
  3. News – Aggregate relevant news
  4. MarketPlace – Publish needs and offers of registered members
  5. Job Board – publish vacancies
  6. Directory – of Service providers
  7. Northern Stars – Capture the details of upcoming Digital companies in the North.
  8. Surgery – Sun Microsystems, KPMG, Business Link, UKTI etc hold surgeries at Daresbury Innovation Centre – registration through the site.

Sponsorship/Partner Opportunities:

Having partnered with two blue chips (KPMG and Sun Microsystems), further partnership/sponsorship opportunities are available for:

  1. A firm of Solicitors
  2. A bank or financial institution
  3. A software company
  4. A firm of Management Consultancy

Advertising Opportunities

Available advertising opportunities include:

  1. Advertise on e-mails to our growing database. Maximum of four e-mails per month.
  2. Banner advert on web site.
  3. Directory of service providers on web site - Free for first 25 to sign up - what are you waiting for?

At present, I have received 35 registrations through the web site and e-mails. If you have not made any arrangements to attend so far, why not drop me a text message on 07769734491 to confirm your attendance. Please make sure your text message includes your full name and company.

NW StartUp 2.0 Business on 17th Jan 08 at KPMG

The first NW StartUp 2.0 event of 2008 will be held at KPMG Manchester on 17th January 2008 covering the subject of software startup business funding. Once again, I had to make last minute arrangements as my keynote speaker can no longer attend the event due to imminent launch of his new startup, GoSecure. In addition, few other speakers I had in mind confirmed unavailability.

Event planning is never too easy, just like any other business, you have to rely on others. Whilst I am awaiting for confirmation of potentially two more speakers, let me introduce confirmed speakers without further ado:

Speaker 1 - Paul Barraclough Tecmentor

Paul has experience of over 50 technology start-ups. His role these days is usually as Chairman, often acting as an interim manager in the early phase before dedicated commercial managers are brought on line. His main role is directing the technologists and their technology to commercial goals. He maintains a distance from the technology but often contribute to IPR creation and have been named as a co-inventor on a number of patents filed by many of the companies he has mentored. In many occasions, he has remained a director through to trade sale and listing and beyond.

Career history:

1994 to To date: Tecmentor Limited - Director
1990 – 2006: Worknorth - The VC arm of Manchester Airport Group - Managing Director
1980 – 1989: 3i and / 3i Investee Companies - Investment Controller / Director

For a full profile, please visit LinkedIn.

I have known Paul for a while and I sought his counsel with respect to £250k debt finance for ebdex during back-end of 2006. If you are looking for a Tech Mentor (Chairman for your startup), I cannot recommend anyone better than Paul! So take the opportunity to meet a real gem of the North West!

Speaker 2 - Doug Stellman - YFM Private Equity

Doug has worked in venture capital since 1993, working on investments ranging from start-up technology businesses through to general development capital investments. Prior to this he worked for Price Waterhouse on IT and systems. He is also a Chartered Accountant with a Bioscience background.

For a full profile, please visit LinkedIn

I met Doug during fund raising campaigns for ebdex. He has invested into many startups in the North West, some of these companies are tenants of Daresbury Innovation Centre, where ebdex and edocr are based. If you are looking for start-up funding, I encourage you to speak to him.

Please click here to visit the event site and register for the event.
